Save Your Computer From Microsoft's Windows 10  Planned Obsolescence

According to Microsoft, Windows 10 will cease to be supported from October 14, 2025. That's less than a year from now. From this date, Microsoft says it will no longer provide free updates from Windows Update, offer technical assistance, or issue security fixes.

Chief among the solutions for avoiding this Microsoft-induced environmental mess is the installation of Linux on these computers. For those who don't know, Linux is used as an umbrella term to refer to countless distributions running the Linux kernel. These operating systems come in a great number of combinations so there is something for everyone, and best of all, for the most part, they don't cost anything.

The main Linux distribution I would probably point most former Windows users to is Linux Mint, simply for the fact that it has a similar layout to Windows 10, barely changes across updates and is easy to use. If you've become annoyed at Microsoft over the last decade for pushing updates without your consent, then you'll like that updates only install in Linux Mint with your express permission.

The latest version of Linux Mint is version 22. It's supported until April 2029, so once you have it installed, you've got at least another 5 years to use your computer; even after this period, there is a good chance your computer will still be supported by Mint or some other Linux distribution.

How To Improve Your Hacking Skills

Hacking is a skill that fascinates many people. You’ve seen hackers in movies. They type at keyboards, breaking into high-security systems in seconds.

But real hacking isn’t quite like that. It takes patience, creativity, and most importantly, a lot of practice.

One of the best ways to sharpen your hacking skills is by playing wargames. They are interactive hacking challenges that push your problem-solving abilities. Of the many online wargames, OverTheWire is the best. It is fun, educational, and accessible for both beginners and expert hackers.

Microsoft Office AI Data Scraping Slyly Switched To Enabled By Default

Microsoft's Connected Experiences feature automatically gathers data from Word and Excel files to train the company's AI models. This feature is turned on by default, meaning user-generated content is included in AI training unless manually deactivated. However, this deactivation is a very convoluted process. Microsoft has yet to comment on the information, so take it with a grain of salt.

This default setting allows Microsoft to use documents such as articles, novels, or other works intended for copyright or commercial purposes without explicit consent. The implications are significant for creators and businesses relying on Microsoft Office for proprietary work, as their data could become part of the company's AI development. For this reason, anyone concerned about protecting their intellectual property or sensitive information should take action immediately.

To do so, users must actively opt out by finding and disabling the feature in settings. The process requires unchecking the box 'Turn on optional connected experiences' that is enabled by default.

On a Windows PC, the steps include going to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Optional Connected Experiences and unchecking the box. Seven steps to disable a critical feature that is turned on automatically seems very convoluted.

Nan Goldin Makes Powerful Speech Condemning Gaza ‘Genocide’

At the opening of her retrospective exhibition, This Will Not End Well, at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie on Friday the artist, photographer and activist Nan Goldin made a powerful speech condemning Israel’s assault on Gaza.

Goldin opened her remarks with a period of silence in honour of the 44,757 people killed in Palestine by Israeli forces, the 3516 people killed in Lebanon, and the 815 Israeli civilians killed on October 7. “Are you uncomfortable?,” she asked the audience. “I hope so. We need to feel uncomfortable, to feel our bodies under siege, even for a moment.” She went on to acknowledge that, while these are the official figures, other reports suggest that the direct and indirect death toll from the war may be closer to 180,000.

She then took aim at the German government, police and cultural establishment for suppressing solidarity with Palestine, pointing to the many examples where artists, writers and teachers have been censored, in some cases for actions as banal as liking Instagram posts. “Germany is home to the largest Palestinian diaspora in Europe. Yet protests are met with police dogs and deportation and stigmatisation,” she said.

As a woman of Jewish heritage, she argued that criticism of Israel has been conflated with antisemitism. “Anti-Zionism has nothing to do with antisemitism,” she said. She described this as a “false equivalence” which is being used to maintain the occupation of Palestine and suppress those who speak out, as well as having the effect of making Jews less safe by “making it harder to define and stop violent hatred against Jews.”

The Tech Utopia Fantasy Is Over

Growing up, there was a more positive view of tech. The future looked awesome - media showing how the future could look like had amazing ideas about how tech could help us and look cool doing it. It was all about comfort, less work, personalized assistance, reducing friction and hassle, unconventional designs, improved materials. The ads were painting a bright future with glossy robots, blinking datacenters, transhumanist image of cyborg-esque humans; an age of knowledge and connection, productivity and ease. We didn't have to think about how it was made, who would lose their job over it, how it would be profitable, how it would be repaired or recycled if broken, how much energy it would use or what rare metals would be needed. It was just cool.

Then came social media, and smartphones. A lot of tools in one, how convenient! How amazing to have the ability to record audio or take pictures while being so affordable! Now even poor people or people in poorer countries could access the internet and some valuable education unrestricted by their environments. I don't know if we had this view organically or if it was pushed on us by the tech companies in interviews and posts - but I distinctly remember this view that this would make society better, that it would be a big step forward for humankind.

The Top 20 Reasons Why You Should Use Linux

The average computer user usually chose Windows as their operating system for the longest time, and Windows still holds a large share of the market. It’s just what came on most desktops and laptops when you bought them. Mac OSX was the choice for some people because they “thought differently.” But Linux? That was the operating system for servers or hackers. You had to do everything in the terminal and know a bunch of esoteric commands. Who wanted to do all that?

But the truth is that Linux never truly was like that. Yes, it has a huge market share when it comes to servers. Yes, if you want to learn all the commands you can use with Linux, you will become an operating system magician. But, it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Linux comes with just as many features as OSX and Windows - and may even be the right operating system for you.

DIY Passive Radar System Verifies ADS-B Transmissions

Like most waves in the electromagnetic spectrum, radio waves tend to bounce off of various objects. This can be frustrating to anyone trying to use something like a GMRS or LoRa radio in a dense city, for example, but these reflections can also be exploited for productive use as well, most famously by radar. Radar has plenty of applications such as weather forecasting and various military uses. With some software-defined radio tools, it’s also possible to use radar for tracking aircraft in real-time at home like this DIY radar system.
